Picking out your Boards - To find the best boards you need to look at 3 things. First thing is to find the boards with little or no knots. Second thing is you need to find a board that is a light color and is also a lite weight. You want to find the boards that do not look like they still hold sap in them(usually the discoloration reddish color is sap). Finally, you want to find the boards that have the rings farther apart. Setting up Boards - Before breaking you should always pick out your board holders and rehearse. For more than 1 board it is best to have more than 2 holders, but 2 holders will do if there are limited number of people. The boards should be held with the grain going out. I mean you should have the smaller rings out toward you and then the bigger ones facing the holders. Spacing is very important when you have more than one station of boards. Realize where you will be once you go through the first target (not where you are before you strike the target) before you go to the second one. You want to do the easiest break first. This will boost your confidence for the other breaks. It is difficult to miss the first one and break the second one(it is a mental issue basically). If you do miss a station, do not quickly try to break it again. You need to reset and refocus again and ask for permission from the instructor. Breaking the Boards - Everytime you break a board(s) you should always picture yourself going thru it. This is where the mental part of breaking comes in to play. You have to picture yourself going thru it and also practice as if you are going thru it. You always kick or strike past your boards when you practice and when you break. When you do practice try not to touch your target. HINT when practicing: If you touch your target it tells your self conscious that the board is hard and in essence sikes you out of the break, so try not to touch it. Try to hit the holders... It is important to know where to strike the board. If you are kicking or attempting any strike coming straight at the target (in most cases) you should hit it in the dead center. If you are doing strikes from the side of the target (eg. elbow smash ) you want to hit it in the middle of the board (in most cases)but more towards the edge that you are closer too. VERY IMPORTANT. I can't stress how important KI-APing is. This WILL decide whether you break or not. It is very important to yell right when you make contact with the target not after or before.
